Host a Street Party to Celebrate the Coronation

03 January 2023

This year the UK will mark the Coronation of King Charles III with a three-day bank holiday weekend from Saturday 6 May to Monday 8 May 2022.

To help residents celebrate the Coronation, Bedford Borough Council is waiving the usual administration fee for street party road closures. Street parties are a great opportunity for communities to come together, usually organised by groups of residents who get together and make arrangements to celebrate with their neighbours, friends and families.

For anyone wishing to hold a street party over the extended bank holiday weekend, the Council asks that applications are submitted by 1 April 2023. Residents can email road.closures@bedford.gov.uk to request a street closure.

Mayor Dave Hodgson said, “The King’s Coronation marks an unprecedented event and an opportunity for our towns and villages to come together to celebrate. The council has been able to waive the application fee for holding a Coronation street party, and we hope that as many neighbourhoods as possible will take the opportunity to join in.”

"We want to make it easy for local residents and communities to organise a street party and celebrate this special occasion.

"I would urge anyone thinking of holding a street party to visit our website or get in touch for help and assistance.”

The waiving of street party fees applies to residents of residential streets only, it does not apply to traders seeking to close high streets.
