Hidden places and secret spaces

Event in Bedford Town Centre

The ancient riverside centre of Bedford has been built up over centuries and has been heralded as a Town of Markets. Today fairs and specialist stalls can be found regularly on St Paul’s Square on the High Street.

The High Street itself is undergoing improvements until November 2021, but if you step down one of the alleys or side paths you will find hidden treasures.

Mill Street has a range of independent shops and cafes, including the top quality John Medhurst Jewellers, and tucked away alongside is Mill Yard cafe, beauty salon, photographic studio and a fashion boutique.

Castle Quay takes its name from the Castle mound alongside the iconic Swan Hotel. But just through the Castle Gate off the High Street are restaurants and cafes, as well as the Higgins Bedford museum.

Arcades are popular too in town.

The Edwardian Arcade off the High Street is a thoroughfare of delightful shops, including the oldest in town: Arcadia sweet shop.

St Cuthbert’s Arcade houses a range of start-up and small businesses including The Store, a unique eco outlet.

Clair Court is another hidden gem, off Lime Street, with a beauty business and a bewitching shop of sorcery.
