Bedford Borough Council has arranged with bus companies to give local bus pass holders free travel during peak time.
Normally, this group would pay £1 to travel before 9.30am. However, with shops in the town centre offering special early opening times for older people, it is hoped that this change will make life a little easier.
People are urged to pay heed to the Government guidance to stop the spread of coronavirus, and follow social distancing measures as far as is possible.
Mayor Dave Hodgson said, “Local shops are really pulling out the stops to help older people during this extraordinary time, so by getting rid of the £1 fare, we hope to make it a little easier for people to get into town."
