Love new business rates

03 February 2017

Minister Margot James heard that changes in business rates had been generally good news for town centre shops.

In speaking to the BedfordBID representatives Christina Rowe and Ismail Anilmis, Margot heard that new rules mean a reduction in bills for most independents.

The next change is that Business Rates, which previously went to Central Government, will now go to local councils. This is expected to be in the region of £20 Million a year from the town centre and BedfordBID is looking forward to seeing how this is going to re-invested. The Bedford Business Improvement District represents 500 businesses who pay a special levy which amounts to £400,000 a year and is used to promote the town under the Love Bedford banner.

Ismail owns ten McDonald’s franchises including the one on Bedford High Street and is a champion of the BID in Bedford which was one of the first in the UK.

Minister for Small Business Margot was in Bedford to address 400 commercial leaders and entrepreneurs at the latest in a series of special events organised by Richard Fuller MP.

Margot talked about leadership in the workplace and was supported by local HR expert Carol H. Scott.

Margot, who ran her own consultancy before going into politics, and Carol both gave examples of how people are the most important asset of any company. They were speaking at the third of five Thursday night events at King’s House, Ampthill Road.
