BID actions on BBC TV

31 August 2018

Activities arranged for businesses by the BedfordBID were shown on a BBC report into “Battle for the High Street”.

Filming for the social media platform Instagram by specialists Yakety Yak, funded by the BID, was shown at Planet Boutique in the Edwardian Arcade alongside Arcadia Sweets, who are active members of the BID Board. Harrison & Simmonds whose 90th anniversary has been publicised by the BID, were also featured in the report

The BBC report quoted 70 independents – although the BID says that number is much higher (those with fewer than five outlets are counted as independents according to industry standards) and said that 2018 was going to be challenging nationally because of store closures.

“What the BBC didn't acknowledge is the number of stores opening – there is a churn among independents in particular with many having a life cycle of little more than two or three years – but as one shop door closes, another opens. Here in Bedford, we have some great examples of successful start-ups.

“The BBC report also talked about M & S closures – whereas in fact there has been NO news that Bedford branch is closing so we are hopeful that our branch is being supported sufficiently well to survive.

“The report then went on to talk about the council’s Big High Street Showcase, again supported by the BID, which was a great success.

“Behind the scenes, businesses like Arcadia and Michael R Peters have taken up a BID offer to join some marketing training so they can take up all the opportunities available.

“The BedfordBID is promoting the town 7 days a week, 365 days of the year via lovebedford.co.uk and our social media platforms like the current Instagram film campaign.”
