Armistice and Remembrance Events in Bedford Borough

01 November 2017

Bedford Borough Council is supporting the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal with Poppies available from the Reception Desk at Borough Hall, and the Royal British Legion will be collecting donations and selling poppies within the Harpur Centre.

The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign, collecting donations to help support their work for the Armed Forces community while the poppies are a symbol of Remembrance for fallen Service men and women killed in conflict.

In Bedford Borough, events planned to mark Armistice Day and Remembrance Day include:

Saturday 11th November- Armistice Day Commemoration and Two Minute Silence

The Royal British Legion will be marking Armistice Day with a 2 minute silence at 11.00am. The event will be held in Riverside Square, Bedford.

Sunday 12th November- Remembrance Day Wreath Laying Ceremony

The traditional wreath laying ceremony and march-past will be held at the War Memorial, Bedford Embankment at 11.00am. Following the wreath laying ceremony, the Mayor, HM Lord-Lieutenant and the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire will take the salute in front of Castle Mound with the march-past ending in Riverside Square, where Bedford Town Band will be playing.

There will also be ceremonies at Goldington Green War Memorial; at the South African Campaign Memorial (outside The Swan Hotel); and at Elstow Abbey where wreaths will be laid on behalf of the Borough Council.
