Guinness World Record setting this summer

06 July 2015

2015 Summer Reading Challenges begin!

Libraries across the UK are getting ready to encourage young readers to explore some of the astonishing real-life achievements and world records as featured in the Guinness World Records Books as part of the Summer Reading Challenge 2015.

Organsied by The Reading Agency charity and the public library network, the annual Summer Reading Challenge, which is aimed and 4 – 11 year olds and their families, is simple and fun.

Every year there is a new theme and this year the Summer Reading Challenge has teamed up with Guinness World Records, the global authority in record-breaking achievements and publisher of the annual Guinness World Record™ book, to establish a “Record Breakers” themed Challenge. Record Breakers brings together fact and fiction, challenging young readers to explore astonishing real-life achievements and world records.

Record Breakers is running at all libraries in Bedford and the mobile library (Bedford Central, Bromham, Kempston, Putnoe and Wootton Libraries).

Record Breakers starts on Saturday 11th July and finishes on Saturday 5th September. Children can sign up at their local library at any time during the summer holidays to take part for free.

As part of this year’s Challenge, children, parents, carers, young volunteers, teachers, much-loved children’s authors and important figures in communities around the UK will be asked to make a pledge to help us set a new Guinness World Records™ title for the Most Pledges Received for a Reading Campaign!

****Record Breaking attempt at Bedford Central Library****

Children can also download the Record Breakers app and watch the characters on their stickers come to life – it’s free to download!

There will be lots of free activities running in libraries over the summer holidays.  Look out for some record breaking mini challenges and all kinds of craft activities.  For more information about what is going on look at the libraries website www.bedford.gov.uk

For young people aged between 11 – 18 years a similar challenge, called “imagiNation", which involves reading and arts activities is also underway.  imagiNation is about reading for pleasure and making art inspired by books. imagiNation has been designed by young people for young people.

Young people can collect their Read Me! imagiNation Log when they join Read Me! The challenge involves reading at least 2 library books and being inspired to create art pieces, based on the books they have read.

Young people can share their logs and art work at the library and help us to create a giant artwork piece. Those who take part in the challenge will receive a free Read Me! Lanyard and Certificate.
