Discover the hidden stories behind some of Bedfordshire’s most iconic buildings and places at a series of special free events celebrating our local heritage.

From Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th September, the volunteers and the teams behind local heritage properties will throw open their doors to the public as part of the nationwide ‘Heritage Open Days’ event. Tours, walks and talks will provide a unique insight into the foundations of Bedfordshire, from the Lime Kiln vault in Castle Lane, to a peek behind the scenes at Stevington Windmill, or perhaps the ‘I Never Knew That!’ and ‘Hidden Landscapes’ guided walks around Bedford town centre, or a Tudor celebration at Willington Dovecote. What’s more it’s all free of charge.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “Across Bedford and Bedfordshire we have some fantastic buildings and historic sites. Each of the locations holds fascinating stories and this is a great opportunity to learn more about our local history and about some of our historic local landmarks. These events will be free to attend so I hope lots of people will be able to take a look behind the scenes and discover some of the stories that have become part of our local heritage.”
